What are the best materials for food packaging?

Choosing the right material depends on the specific needs of the food being served and your values as a business.

If you are storing cold food on shelves such as sushi, salads or sandwiches, then plastic is the right way to go, as its airtight sealing properties is great for extending shelf life and preserving the freshness of the food.

Delivering hot food to your customers? Aluminium foil is a cheap and reliable way to package food, as its excellent thermal conductivity, and ability to reflect heat, makes it unbeatable when it comes to keeping the food warm.

Since the ban of polystyrene in 2023, we have seen an increase in the use of bagasse clamshells amongst takeout shops and street vendors. Being 100% biodegradable and compostable, bagasse is the most eco-friendly material used in the food packaging industry to date. It is not only good for the environment, but also great for packaging hot and greasy food, like kebabs and falafels.

Another eco-friendly option, widely used in cafes and bakeries, is cardboard packaging. Cardboard is strong and durable, providing reliable protection for food items during transport. They also have good insulating properties, helping to maintain the temperature of hot or cold food.
